As of 23rd of March 2010, Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has confirmed Contagious Equine Metritis (CEM) in a 10 year-old Highland mare stabled in Durham, England.
The mare tested positive by both pathogen isolation on cell culture and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) on 22nd of March; testing was carried out by the Veterinary Laboratories Agency, Bury St Edmunds.
The affected mare is under restriction and treatment has commenced in line with the HBLB Code of Practice. A full investigation will be undertaken by a veterinary officer on 23rd March 2010.
