RDA celebrates biggest ever National Championships

12th July 2010

The RDA National Championships was bigger than ever this year, with over 450 competitors, including riders from all of the charity's 18 regions across the UK. The flagship event, held at Hartpury College with Princess Anne, Paralympic stars and celebrities in attendance, was a fitting finale to the charity's 40th Anniversary year.

HRH The Princess Royal, RDA's President, visited the Championships for the first time and praised the high standard of horsemanship, as well as the successful growth of an event that relies so heavily on volunteer support (approximately 3 volunteers for every competitor). Princess Anne received a guided tour of the site, and enjoyed meeting competitors, volunteers, supporters and of course some of the 260 horses. While viewing the 'Countryside Challenge' event, The Princess commented on how the Championships is driving up standards in the sport, and also how it provides opportunities for achievement for riders of all abilities.

Prizes were presented by a host of sporting stars, including Paralympians Lee Pearson, Sophie Christianson and Ricky Balshaw, and BBC sports presenter Clare Balding.

At a supporters' reception, Her Royal Highness presented the first ever President's Awards for outstanding service to RDA, and also received a cheque from Countrywide for £55,000. Countrywide announced their ongoing commitment for RDA, confirming that the charity has been chosen once again as Countrywide's Staff Charity of the Year.

The National Championships is RDA's flagship event, bringing together hundreds of competitors of all abilities in events including Dressage, Countryside Challenge, Vaulting, Horse Care & Knowledge, Arts & Crafts, Best Turned Out and Musical Ride. The event has also proved a springboard for the Paralympics, and many of the current Team GB have previously competed at The Championships.

"This feels like a special year for the National Championships, and once again we are grateful for the support of Hartpury College." said Championship Chairman Doug Smith. "We are delighted to have been visited by so many special guests, but it is always the individual achievements of our competitors that we remember most at the end of the day. And none of that could happen without the outstanding level of professionalism, the commitment of the volunteers and supporters, and the determination of Groups who overcome many challenges to get here."
