TASS athletes and alumni help Team GB and ParalympicsGB achieve best ever results

25th September 2012

When Lord Sebastian Coe, London 2012 Organising Committee Chairman, made his opening address at the Olympic Opening Ceremony; the words "Inspire a Generation" rang clear.

For Team GB and ParalympicsGB athletes, they have certainly found a place in our nation's hearts, with amazing support for each and every person across every inch of land, truly capturing the spirit of the London 2012 Games.

Record numbers of TASS athletes and alumni were selected for the London 2012 Games, with over 200 competing. Out of these 44 athletes came away with medals, 10 of whom won multiple medals.  In Beijing, TASS athletes and alumni won a total of 18 medals across the Olympics and Paralympics.  In total 66% of the 200 TASS athletes and alumni had been supported in the last Olympic and Paralympic cycle.

Stand-out performances were made in  Equestrian which was one of the top performing sports across both the Olympics and Paralympics.  The team won medals across every discipline, with TASS alumni Natasha Baker (TASS2012, 2006-8) and Sophie Wells (TASS2012, 2005-8) winning five medals between them including three gold's; an amazing achievement for the debutants.

"It was great to see so many TASS supported athletes compete at their best during the London 2012 Games. So many achieved their own personal goals as well as winning medals.  These achievements hight the importance of TASS and its network in an athlete's journey to success." Guy Taylor, National Scheme Director

Following such a successful summer for British sport, attention now turns to the next crop of young British talent who will all have goals of making the squads for Rio 2016.  Attention will be firmly on the slopes and ice this winter as qualification for Sochi 2014 heats up, with many TASS athletes in the mix.

A Summary of TASS supported London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic medallists can be found on the TASS website.
