The most recent and thorough research into the equestrian industry is the National Equestrian Survey 2006, conducted by the British Equestrian Trade Association (BETA) which is a member of the BEF. Sample results:

  • Horse owners and riders spend around £4 billion per year
  • There are 1.35 million horses in Britain
  • They are owned or cared for by 720,000 people, or 1.2% of the UK population
  • 4.3 million people have ridden in the last year

See further details and information on how to obtain the full research report on their website at www.beta-uk.org

On a wider scale, the BEF works with other equestrian bodies such as the Horse Racing Authority on the British Horse Industry Confederation. Find out more at www.bhic.co.uk
