Top tip for Winter:
Grass grows slowly in the Autumn and during the Winter the nutritional value of grass is very low. During these months most horses will find it impossible to obtain the necessary calories and protein they will need to sustain themselves.
It is vital most horses are provided with adequate additional forage to make up for the lack of grazing. Digesting forage produces heat which will keep your horse/pony warm when the weather gets really cold.
During cold spells energy requirements may increase by 30% to maintain body temperature. This is a real problem for elderly horses who may have poor teeth or inefficient digestive systems.
Many feed companies including Spillers offer advice on nutrition for all horses and can be contacted on 01908 226626 or via their website www.spillers-feeds.com.
Remember it is only by measuring your horse that you will notice weight loss, as a gradual dimunition will go unobserved.
The British equestrian team's horses are supported by top vets and equine physiotherapists. Merial is the official supplier of veterinary medicines to the British Equestrian Team.
