Recruitment Opportunities


The British Equestrian Federation (BEF) has developed considerably in recent years. It is a large sporting governing body representing and working with 16 independent Member Bodies with over 250,000 members. It is a UK Sport priority sport, a highly successful medal-winning sport, and seeks to provide leadership in an industry that has 4.3 million riders, drivers and vaulters. We seek to contribute further to the future of equestrian sport and leisure by extending our reach throughout Britain; in particular at this time by regionalising our focus of delivery in England. The BEF has produced a BEF Club and Coach Development Plan, which has been awarded a considerable sum from Sport England to support its implementation. We have established a network of Regional Development Coordinators and we now seek to employ the following:

BEF Regional Coaches (x7)

Yorkshire, North West, West Midlands and London - Full time (35 hours per week) 
East and East Midlands - Part time (21 hours per week)
South West - Part time (14 hours per week)

Salary: £22,000 per annum (pro rata) 

Information regarding the Regional Coach role is as follows:

BEF Regional Coach

Organisation: British Equestrian Federation

Salary: Circa £22,000 pro rata

Location: Based from your home, BEF office is at Stoneleigh, Warwickshire. Regional travel required

Type of Contract: Fixed-term to March 2010 initially.

Job Description - Your role:

Reporting to the Head of Regional Development, supported by the Head of Sports Development and working in partnership with the Regional Development Coordinator, these posts are planned to cover each funded Sport England region and the location and extent of the role relates to the Sport England funding allocated to each region.

The role is primarily to provide the coaching required to deliver the club and coach programme across the BEF and to provide a single, coordinated and effective coaching interface for the BEF at Regional level between sports coaching agencies and the BEF (including all its Member Bodies) in the region. In this way, BEF national coaching strategies, including UKCC, will be delivered effectively in your area. You will work closely with Member Body representatives and the BEF Regional Development Coordinators. You will also work closely with the BEF Head of Sports Development as you will also provide a lead to coaching projects on a national basis depending on your expertise and abilities. We do expect that 70% of your time will involve practical coaching.

You should have:

  • Knowledge of UKCC
  • Familiarity with Sports Development and Sports Coaching structure and culture in England
  • Sound understanding of sports development principles and LTAD
  • Knowledge of Step into Sport
  • Knowledge of ClubMark
  • The ability to effectively recruit and induct staff
  • The ability to  line-manage


You should be:

  • Able to demonstrate credibility as a coach with broad skills/knowledge - and as an equestrian ambassador to all stakeholders at this level
  • A holder of UKCC-accredited equestrian coaching qualification in relevant disciplines, or demonstrable commitment undertaken towards it
  • Able to prove an ability to educate, mentor and support other coaches effectively
  • Self-motivated, able to work effectively in isolation, by telephone/email and face-to-face
  • Able to project manage and co - ordinate tasks
  • Able to demonstrate  team leadership, team- and capacity-building, people management, facilitation and group co-ordination skills
  • Able to anticipate change or potential difficulties
  • Able to demonstrate  excellent communication skills both oral and written, eg detailed and sensitive numerical and qualitative reporting - both oral and written
  • Diplomatic


Knowledge of the equestrian environment is essential.

BEF Regional Development Co-ordinator (part-time)
in the London Region

The role has become available following the appointment of Tim Hadaway to the role of Competition Manager for Equestrian Sports at the London 2012 Olympic Games

BEF Regional Development Co-ordinator

Organisation: British Equestrian Federation

Salary: Circa £23 - 28k (pro-rata) depending on the candidate

Location: Based from your home. BEF office is at Stoneleigh, Warwickshire. Regional and some national travel required.

Type of Contract: Part-time (18 hours per week approx). Fixed-term to March 2010 initially.

Job Description - Your role:

Reporting to the Head of Regional Development, this post will cover the London (Sport England) region on a half-time basis. The role will incorporate plans that are already in place through our existing London 2012 Legacy agenda.
The role is primarily to provide a single and effective interface for the BEF at Regional level between sports development agencies and the BEF (including all its Member Bodies) in the region. In this way, BEF national strategies, including the BEF Club and Coach Development Plan, will be delivered effectively in your area. You will liaise, co-ordinate and network many agencies and individuals who have a stake in the future of equestrian sport and leisure, and you will work closely with Member Body representatives and the new BEF Regional Coaches. You may also provide a lead to projects on a national basis depending on your expertise and abilities.


You should have:

You should be capable of performing effectively in the sports development industry in the UK as an accomplished development officer/co-ordinator and have the  ability to:

  • work effectively on your own initiative and in disparate teams and projects
  • network effectively a range of public and private stakeholders with varying geography and priorities
  • inspire and facilitate individuals and groups, and co-ordinate tasks effectively
  • work closely with colleagues towards positive outcomes, sometimes in difficult circumstances
  • travel extensively as needed
  • manage financial resources and be responsible for six-figure budgets
  • direct human resources as appropriate
  • manage successfully a range of complex relationships in a fast-moving environment
  • deliver specific results and demonstrate full accountability for people, outcomes and budgets to a range of stakeholders.

Knowledge of the  equestrian environment is preferable, but not essential.
